Off to a Winning Start

Posted on August 11, 2016 by rustymoss

If you’ve been following along, you know that I recently left my sales job to free up time for travel, golf, and family. Well, my dad and I played golf on Monday and–next time I’ll bring more water! Ladies and gentlemen, it is hot–very HOT in this heat. I love playing golf when it’s over 100 degrees because no one else is ever on the course, however, I usually stay a lot more hydrated. Neither of us drank enough and we suffered the consequences. It’s ok, I learned to bring my own water next time! I’ve also freed up a little more time for poker. I play, without fail, on the first Saturday of every month. Those of you that know me, really know me, know that I rarely, super rarely (if that’s a phrase?), have a losing month. Well, July was a losing month for me. It wasn’t a big loser, but nevertheless, I was in the red. It was my first losing month this year, and hopefully my last. So, to start off August, I really wanted a win. Not just a normal $300-$500 win, but a big win. We got just the result we were looking for.

We got started around 3pm on Saturday and after 20 minutes, it wasn’t looking good. This game usually lasts until daylight so I gamble a little more in the beginning than usual. I look down at the J♥ 9♥ 8♣ 6♣ and put in a small raise to 25. I get a few callers and the flop brings Q♥ T♥ 7♣. Not a bad flop for me. I have a full wrap and a straight flush draw, and a backdoor straight flush draw. The first player leads out for a pot sized bet, I instashove, and the player behind me moves all-in as well. The initial bettor moves in as well and, suddenly, I don’t like my chances. I feel as if I’m up against a set and a higher flush draw. The hands are turned over, and it was worst than I thought: QQxx and AKJ9 with higher hearts. Needless to say, I am in a terrible spot.  The turn brings the 7♦ and the river 3♠.

0:20 in, and I am down 500. CHIPS PLEASE! After buying an additional 600 in chips, I never lost another big pot. Thirteen hours later I cashed out for just shy of 3,000 for nearly a 2,000 win. I’ll take it, and August is off to a sensational start! I’ll be starting a new game next month, so if you’re interested, just let me know!
